Chris Brown is making news again on social media, but not for the usual controversial reasons. In this case, the singer is Tweeting out for a good cause.
Brown offered support to a gay rights campaign calling for action against human rights crimes in Africa, encouraging Team Breezy to join him.
He Tweeted in relation to an AllOut.org petition asking Cameroon's President Paul Biya and other local politicians to stop anti-gay violence in the region.
The petition asks Biya to prevent discrimination, end criminalization, and free all gays who are currently incarcerated due to their sexual orientation.
Chris Brown appears to be on board, and publicly at that.
The issue of homophobia in the African nation reached a critical point when lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activist Eric Ohena Lembembe was found murdered.
That was July. Now, activists are fighting back harder than ever.
The often-volatile star's response might come as a shock to some, seeing as how he has made headlines for using anti-gay language in the past.
In 2010, he called a member of B2K a gay slur. In 2011, he hurled a gay slur at photographers who he thought tipped off the cops about his illegally parked car.
Also that year, he was accused of making homophobic rhetoric during a basketball game. Frank Ocean said Brown called him a "faggot" in a brawl in L.A.
Still, the 24-year-old seems to be turning over a new leaf.
In June, Chris Brown announced his "Unity Campaign," aimed at encouraging "all races, genders, sexes, (everyone) gay or straight to love each other."
That's something we could all embrace. Kudos to Chris.
